Sandpapers: The Lives and Letters of Eugene Manlove Rhodes and Charles Fletcher Lummis

An Intriguing Account of a Western Writer and His Editor
Eugene Manlove Rhodes spent the better part of his life in turn of the century untamed New Mexico as a horseman and cowman, and in his late life wrote western novels and short stories about his unique and exciting escapades. Most of his novels deal with real characters from the real Wild West, and the stories offer those of us interested in it a splendidly honest account of the "good men and true...humorous and happy and care-free and polite...But when it came to putting something over on them or their friends...these men were hard, and stern, tireless, loyal and grim, courageous and resourceful." Gene Rhodes knew men whose lives changed the Wild West and New Mexico, men like Pat Garrett, Senator Albert Fall, and Oliver Lee. He understood the wild land and the people who settled there but never tamed it. In this biography, author Frank M. Clark offers readers the letters that passed between Rhodes and his long-time friend, editor and publisher Charles Fletcher Lummis. Both were unusually gifted men, articulate, generous-spirited, and loyal; both knew the West and understood it in all its paradoxes and complexities. Author Clark brings Rhodes and Lummis to life in an intriguing way that makes for great reading for lovers of the West. Clark has the gift most biographers hope for: the ability to paint a generous yet honest view of his subjects. This biography is a must for every fan of the real Wild West and the true Western genre.

Schaum's Outline of English Grammar
Published in Paperback by McGraw-Hill (March, 1991)
Authors: Eugene Ehilich and Eugene H. Ehrlich
Average review score:

Not exactly what I expected but still really good.
As with other Schaum's outlines, this one has lots of exercises for students to practice with. I was confused because I thought this book and Schaum's "theory and probs of english grammar" were different. In fact, they are the same (basically), but this one is simply an earlier edition... Perhaps the earliest??

Seashore life of Puget Sound, the Strait of Georgia, and the San Juan Archipelago
Published in Unknown Binding by University of Washington Press ()
Author: Eugene N. Kozloff
Average review score:

A handy little field guide to the region
This early book by Kozloff provides a helpful overview of the nearshore marine life of the Pacific Northwest. It is now quite dated though. It is not, however, as good as his more recent book, "Seashore Life of the Northern Pacific Coast : An Illustrated Guide to Northern California, Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia" Paperback (November 1983)

I recommend that you seek out the latter book if you are looking for a good field guide to the ecology of marine inverbrate and other nearshore organisms of the Pacific NW.

The Secret Garden: Piano/Vocal Score

A wonderful musical for children and adults
Perhaps the best adaptation of the children's book "The Secret Garden," with excellent songs and a plot that stays true to the book.

Not an easy book
All Davis' books are for sincere truth seekers and this one is no exception. Suitable only to people really interested in yoga philosophy in the tradition of Paramahansa Yogananda.

The Self-Revealed Knowledge That Liberates the Spirit: A Handbook of Essential Information for Experiencing a Conscious Relationship With the Infinite and Restoring Soul Awareness to Wholeness

Average review score:

Self-revealed knowledge
A very good book about eastern spirituality. Suggested to serious seekers of all paths...

A Short History of Western Civilization: Since 1600
Published in Paperback by McGraw-Hill Humanities/Social Sciences/Languages (June, 1996)
Authors: Richard Eugene Sullivan, Dennis Sherman, and John Baugham Harrison
Average review score:

Pretty good.
The only thing I don't really like about this book is the categorization. It discusses Napoleon, then skips to the industrial revolution, but then comes back to Napoleon again and the Bourbon restoration. In my opinion, history books should follow the chronology of history, and include everything from one time period in one section.

Good book
I got this for Grandma for Christmas. It has a good variety of puzzles - not too difficult - and the large print is good for people with vision problems (myself included!)
